Morocco Implements New Vehicle Registration Plate Standards
In a significant move aimed at enhancing road safety and streamlining vehicle registration processes, the National Road Safety Agency of Morocco has announced the unification of the design and dimensions of vehicle registration plates that are to be used both domestically and internationally. This decision seeks to address practical challenges associated with international travel and eliminate issues arising from the variations in plate formats currently in use.
This initiative follows the publication of Minister of Transport and Logistics Decision No. 640.26 on August 3, 2026, in the Official Gazette No. 7531, which amends the previous decision No. 2711.10 issued on September 29, 2010, regarding the registration of motor vehicles and trailers. The new regulations stipulate that existing plates can continue to be used until the first transfer of ownership occurs for vehicles registered under the regular series that are currently utilizing non-compliant plates. After this point, these vehicles will be issued the new standardized plates.
The agency further clarified that registration plates for motor vehicles in the regular series that are used for international travel, which currently display Latin letters and a separate indication of the Kingdom of Morocco, will remain valid until December 31, 2026. Following this date, these will also be replaced by the newly standardized model. The implementation of the new standardized plates began immediately upon the publication of the ministerial decision, applying to all new vehicle registrations in Morocco, including those imported from abroad, whether new or used.
Furthermore, the National Road Safety Agency has called upon all manufacturers of vehicle registration plates to comply with the stipulations of the aforementioned decision, emphasizing the importance of adhering strictly to the prescribed design, dimensions, and components as outlined.
