Morocco Expands Its Military Fleet with New Oshkosh Vehicles
In a significant move to enhance its military logistics and operational capabilities, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces have placed an order for 50 M1070A1 heavy-duty transport vehicles from the renowned U.S. defense contractor, Oshkosh Defense. This acquisition was facilitated through Optimum Vehicle Logistics, the official distributor for Oshkosh in Morocco, as reported by various defense industry sources.
The recent contract not only includes the delivery of the M1070A1 trucks but also encompasses 50 MN573 specialized heavy-duty semi-trailers. The M1070A1 trucks are engineered with an 8x8 wheel configuration that is powered by a robust 700-horsepower Caterpillar C18 diesel engine, coupled with a six-speed Allison automatic transmission, making them exceptionally capable in transporting substantial military assets.
These advanced vehicles are designed to operate effectively as part of a road train with a gross weight capacity of up to 109 metric tons, which allows for the transportation of heavy military equipment such as tanks, artillery, and recovery vehicles. The cab of the M1070A1 is fortified with ballistic protection and is spacious enough to accommodate a crew of three, outfitted with two winches that provide a combined pulling force of 45.3 metric tons.
Furthermore, the MN573 semi-trailers, which are produced in collaboration with the Dutch company Broshuis B.V., feature sophisticated hydraulic suspension systems and pendulum axles with steering capabilities, which ensures better maneuverability and stability on various terrains. According to preliminary agreements, the first batch of the M1070A1 vehicles has already been delivered to Morocco and is currently operational within the Moroccan military units.
This fleet enhancement will enable the Moroccan Army to transport essential military hardware, including the American M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks, as well as other critical systems such as the 155-mm CAESAR self-propelled artillery systems and M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles. In a related development, Oshkosh Defense has also recently been awarded a contract by the U.S. Army for additional FMTV A2 LVAD trucks, demonstrating the company’s expanding role in military logistics and transport solutions.
