Morocco Strengthens Security Ties at International Defense Exhibition in Turkey

Moroccan Security Chief Engages with Turkish Officials at SAHA 2026

Abdellatif Hammouchi, the Director General of Morocco’s National Security and Territorial Surveillance, represented Morocco at the prestigious International Defense and Aerospace Exhibition (SAHA 2026) held in Istanbul from May 7 to 9. This significant event gathers industry leaders, experts, and innovators, providing a platform to advance technological developments in defense and aerospace, while also fostering partnerships and facilitating technology transfer for the future landscape of these sectors.

During his working visit to Turkey, which took place on May 7 and 8 at the invitation of Mahmut Demirtaş, the Director General of the Turkish National Police, Hammouchi engaged in discussions with several high-ranking security officials. Notably, he conferred with Ibrahim Kalin, the Director of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization, and Hüseyin Avşar, the Deputy Secretary of the Turkish Strategic Defense Industries System (SSB). Their conversations focused on enhancing security cooperation and collaboration in technical assistance, as well as developing a robust security partnership that aligns with the strategic ties between Morocco and Turkey.

Additionally, they reviewed the latest technological and industrial innovations pertaining to security equipment and materials, emphasizing the importance of mutual interests in these areas. This collaboration is crucial in strengthening the security framework between the two nations, especially in light of recent regional challenges.

Regional Security Concerns and Morocco's Stance

Amidst his engagements in Turkey, Morocco has also been vocal about its concerns regarding the repeated provocations by the Polisario Front in areas east of the Sahara security wall. The Moroccan government has firmly denounced these actions, asserting that such escalations violate existing ceasefire agreements and could potentially constitute a cause for military response. This situation underscores the complexities of regional security dynamics and highlights Morocco's commitment to maintaining stability.

Moreover, the Executive Council of the African Union recently endorsed Morocco's candidacies within the international system during its 42nd session held in Addis Ababa. This included support for Morocco's candidacy to the International Maritime Organization for the term 2024-2025, reflecting the nation’s proactive stance in international affairs and its commitment to enhancing its role on the global stage.

In a separate yet alarming development, reports have surfaced alleging that Moroccan officers were casualties of Iranian strikes targeting Israeli military installations while undergoing training in northern Israel. These unverified claims illustrate the ongoing complexities and dangers faced by Moroccan forces abroad. Additionally, the rise in insecurity in the Sahel region has been highlighted by recent attacks on Moroccan convoys by armed groups, reinforcing the urgent need for collaborative security efforts in light of the threats posed by terrorist organizations and separatist movements in the region.
