Morocco's Agricultural Sector Poised for Growth with 90 Million Quintals Harvest Expected

Promising Agricultural Prospects for 2025-2026 in Morocco

Morocco is looking forward to an impressive harvest of 90 million quintals and an anticipated growth of approximately 15% in agricultural GDP for the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign, as announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Ahmed El Bouari. This optimistic outlook was presented during the 18th edition of the International Agriculture Fair in Morocco (SIAM), which took place on April 20, 2026, in Meknes. Following years of persistent drought, the return of rainfall between January and March 2026 has significantly benefitted the sowing of 3.9 million hectares of cereals, marking a notable recovery in the agricultural sector.

The return to a more favorable water situation is at the heart of this revival, with dam reserves now reaching an impressive 13 billion cubic meters, translating to a filling rate of 75.7%. This substantial water volume not only assures the success of spring and summer crops but also facilitates the reestablishment of irrigated agriculture across the nation. In addition to cereals, other tree crop sectors, especially olives, citrus fruits, and date palms, are experiencing marked improvements compared to previous years plagued by water scarcity.

Strengthening Food Security Through Livestock and Poultry Production

According to the latest agricultural report from the country, the livestock sector remains a cornerstone of the agricultural economy in Morocco, contributing 35% to the agricultural GDP and involving approximately 1.2 million breeders. The national livestock population, estimated at 33 million heads, supports the production of around 530,000 tons of red meat and 2 billion liters of milk. This sector plays a critical role in ensuring income stability for rural communities and generates approximately 135 million workdays each year, solidifying its essential position within the country’s social economy.

The Moroccan poultry sector is also thriving, achieving production levels of 784,000 tons of white meat and 6.5 billion eggs, thus meeting all domestic market needs. This comprehensive performance in both animal and plant production bolsters the Kingdom’s food security in an era of climate stabilization. To sustain these accomplishments and enhance the sector’s resilience against forthcoming challenges, storage infrastructure improvements and irrigation programs are being implemented for the next agricultural campaign.
