Morocco Sees Notable Increase in Gas Imports

According to a recent report from the specialized platform "Energy", Morocco's gas imports saw a remarkable increase of 15.4% in July 2026 compared to the previous month. This surge is attributed to the country's recovery from supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran. The data indicates that Moroccan gas imports reached approximately 991 gigawatt-hours in July, a significant increase from 859 gigawatt-hours recorded in June.

Despite this month-on-month growth, the annual comparison shows that imports remained relatively stable, with only a slight decrease from 992 gigawatt-hours in July 2025. The Moroccan Ministry of Energy has not disclosed specific sources for its gas supplies, but it has indicated that liquefied gas is being imported from various international markets.

Sources and Transportation of Gas to Morocco

The report highlights that Morocco sources liquefied natural gas from several key suppliers, including Russia and the United States, alongside supplies from Shell under a contract established in 2023. The process of regasifying liquefied natural gas occurs in Spain before it is transported to Morocco through the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, which was previously used for transporting Algerian gas to Europe.

The monthly breakdown of Morocco's gas imports for the first seven months of 2026 shows a fluctuating trend, with January recording 822 gigawatt-hours, February at 572, March at 583, April dropping to 377, May increasing to 778, June at 859, and finally, July peaking at 991 gigawatt-hours. This data reflects the ongoing adjustments in Morocco's energy strategies amid changing geopolitical conditions and supply chain dynamics.
