Morocco's Gas Imports Experience Significant Growth
Recent reports indicate a notable increase in Morocco's gas imports, which surged by 15.4% in July 2026 compared to the previous month. This uptick is attributed to the nation’s recovery from supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel's military actions in Iran. According to data shared by the specialized platform Energy, Morocco imported approximately 991 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas in July, an increase from 859 GWh in June. Year-on-year comparisons reveal that the gas imports remained relatively stable, with figures nearly identical to the 992 GWh recorded in July 2025.
Sources and Supply Chains of Gas Imports
While the Moroccan Ministry of Energy does not disclose specific sources for the gas supplies, it has been noted that the country primarily imports liquefied natural gas (LNG) from various international sources. Notably, Morocco sources LNG from countries including Russia and the United States, alongside supplies facilitated by Shell under a long-term agreement established in 2023. The process involves regasifying LNG in Spain and subsequently transporting it through the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, which was previously utilized for the transit of Algerian gas to Europe. The data for the initial seven months of 2026 reflects a gradual recovery and a strategic pivot in Morocco's energy import strategies.
Morocco's energy landscape continues to evolve as it seeks to manage its gas supply effectively amidst geopolitical challenges and changing market dynamics. This recent increase in gas imports positions Morocco favorably as it navigates the complexities of energy security in a turbulent regional context.
