Morocco's Sahara at the Heart of UN Discussions

Moroccan Sahara Central to UN Discourse

The United Nations has unveiled the agenda for the Caribbean regional seminar of the Fourth Committee on Decolonization, which is set to take place in Managua, Nicaragua, from May 25 to 27. This seminar continues the dialogue on issues concerning non-self-governing territories, prominently featuring the ongoing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

According to details published on the United Nations' official website, the seminar will carry the theme "Progress Achieved, Renewed Commitments, Partnerships, and Innovative Approaches." The event will be presided over by Menisa Rambally, Ambassador of Saint Lucia, as the chair of the C-24 Special Committee, which is tasked with overseeing decolonization matters within the UN framework.

The UN organization has confirmed that the seminar will focus on evaluating developments related to the decolonization process and discussing ways to enhance international cooperation and partnerships concerning issues within the committee's scope. The conclusions and final recommendations from this seminar are expected to be forwarded to the thematic session of the Special Committee scheduled for June, before being presented to the United Nations General Assembly.

Notably, the seminar is anticipated to witness the participation of political, human rights, and civil society figures from the southern regions of Morocco, aiming to present insights and data related to the economic, social, and human rights conditions in the Moroccan Sahara. Attention will also be drawn to developmental projects and infrastructure initiatives launched by the Kingdom as part of its new development model for the southern regions.

This UN event represents a significant diplomatic milestone in the ongoing discourse surrounding the Sahara issue within the United Nations, especially as Morocco seeks to enhance its institutional presence and advocacy across various international platforms. By highlighting the developmental approach adopted by Rabat in the southern regions, Morocco aims to connect this strategy to broader themes of stability and local development.

The Fourth Committee of the United Nations comprises a diverse array of member states from different continents, including China, Russia, India, Indonesia, Cuba, Venezuela, Tunisia, Syria, and Ethiopia, alongside nations from the Caribbean region. This UN body continues to hold annual regional seminars to monitor issues related to decolonization and developments in the territories within its purview.
