Nizar Baraka Emphasizes Strategic Development in Dakhla
On Sunday, Nizar Baraka, the Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party, presided over a significant meeting in Dakhla, organized to commemorate the anniversary of the recovery of the Oued Eddahab region. This gathering served as a crucial platform to assess the outcomes of the new development model for the southern provinces, a decade after its launch, while also looking ahead to the region's prospects in light of royal directives.
During his address, Baraka reaffirmed the Moroccan people's unwavering commitment to the nation's constants and the sovereignty of the Sahara. He highlighted the qualitative leap the region has experienced across various sectors, showcasing substantial progress in economic integration initiatives. Notably, he pointed to the advancement of the highway connecting Tiznit and Dakhla, which is a vital artery for enhancing economic connectivity between the northern and southern parts of the kingdom.
Baraka also announced the imminent operation of the seawater desalination plant in Dakhla, set to commence this month. This initiative aims to meet the local population's drinking water needs and provide irrigation for approximately 5,200 hectares of agricultural land, thereby bolstering water and food security in the area. He stressed the importance of enhancing local seafood products through industrial processing, which would create job opportunities for youth and add significant value to the local economy.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General noted the progress made on the construction of the Mohammed VI University Hospital and the medical school in Dakhla, which are essential for training local competencies and improving healthcare services. He described the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region as being on the brink of a deep strategic transformation, positioning itself as Morocco's main gateway to Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Sahel countries.
In this context, Baraka emphasized that the anticipated completion of the Dakhla Atlantic Port project by 2028 will serve as a major development hub, akin to the Tangier Med Port, alongside the opportunities presented by equipped industrial zones and renewable energy projects, including green hydrogen. He also highlighted the expected impact of the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline linking Nigeria and Morocco in reducing energy costs and attracting investments.
On the political front, the Istiqlal Party's Secretary-General reiterated his commitment to the proposal of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to the ongoing dispute. He called for unity and strengthening the internal front to support the implementation of this territorial option. Baraka officially announced the party's slogan "My National Future" for the upcoming elections and declared the candidacy of Mubarak Hamia on behalf of the Istiqlal Party in the Oued Eddahab electoral district.
