Rabat to Shine as UNESCO World Book Capital 2026 with Major Cultural Celebrations

Rabat's Cultural Renaissance as World Book Capital 2026

The Moroccan city of Rabat is poised to become a vibrant center of global culture as it has been officially designated as the UNESCO World Book Capital for the year 2026. This prestigious recognition will kick off an extensive program starting on April 24, coinciding with the highly anticipated 31st edition of the International Publishing and Book Fair (SIEL), which is scheduled to take place from May 1 to May 10, 2026. Under the esteemed High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, these events are expected to elevate Rabat's status as a pivotal hub for culture, literature, and the broader global knowledge sector.

The acknowledgment of Rabat as the World Book Capital is a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage, its unwavering commitment to education, and the robust development of its publishing industry. Currently, Rabat is home to over 54 publishing houses and boasts an expanding network of bookstores, all of which significantly contribute to enhancing access to knowledge and literature.

Expanding Access to Literature Through SIEL

The International Publishing and Book Fair, organized by Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, is regarded as one of the largest literary congregations in Africa, forming a crucial part of the year-long celebrations. In collaboration with national stakeholders and UNESCO, the organizers have curated an impressive lineup of 342 activities across 12 thematic areas, aiming to broaden access to literature by extending reading initiatives and literary engagements into non-traditional venues such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, orphanages, public squares, and transport systems.

This year’s edition of SIEL is set to feature a remarkable 890 exhibitors from 60 different countries, among which are 320 direct participants and 570 indirect contributors, collectively showcasing over 130,000 book titles. France has been honored as the guest of honor, and the fair will also pay tribute to the legacy of Ibn Battuta, the illustrious 14th-century Moroccan explorer, with a special emphasis on travel literature. Furthermore, the event is expected to host more than 204 cultural gatherings, uniting 720 thinkers, writers, and creative minds to delve into discussions surrounding reading culture and innovations within the creative industries.

The World Book Capital initiative, established by UNESCO, recognizes cities that are dedicated to fostering a love of books and reading across all age demographics through comprehensive year-long programming. With Rabat's designation, it becomes the 26th city to earn this esteemed title since the initiative’s inception in 2001, following in the footsteps of previous recipients such as Accra in 2023 and Rio de Janeiro in 2025, highlighting the program's extensive global impact.

Supported by an advisory committee comprising representatives from prominent international bodies in publishing, bookselling, libraries, and authorship, Rabat's calendar brimming with literary and cultural events is anticipated to spark important dialogues surrounding literacy, creativity, and knowledge accessibility throughout Africa and beyond.
