Renault's 24/7 Operations in Tangier, Morocco
In the vibrant city of Tangier, Morocco, the Renault factory operates around the clock, producing an astonishing vehicle every minute, day and night. A recent report from Belgian media outlet MO* sheds light on the inner workings of this significant industrial player in Morocco, highlighting that the majority of the vehicles produced are exported to Europe. The efficiency of the operation is remarkable, with completed vehicles loaded onto trains that transport them to the nearby Tanger Med port, located just 33 kilometers away.
According to Miguel Olivier Boquera, the general director of the Tangier site, the establishment of a railway connection was a crucial factor in Renault's decision to set up operations in Morocco. The importance of this logistical support cannot be overstated, as it facilitates the seamless export of approximately 90% of the factory's output, primarily to the European Union, where these vehicles enjoy duty-free access.
Local Component Production and Employment Growth
Another significant advantage of the Tangier facility is its robust network of suppliers. Boquera noted that 65% of the components, excluding engines and gearboxes, are already manufactured within Morocco, with an ambitious goal to increase this figure to 75% by 2030. This local sourcing not only bolsters the Moroccan economy but also enhances the factory's operational efficiency.
The factory employs around 7,000 individuals directly, with an additional 11,000 workers in the supply chain, as stated by Ahmed Bahnis, a representative of the UMT union. Furthermore, the site stands out for its commitment to sustainable energy, with 70% of its electricity sourced from wind power, while the remainder comes from biomass, highlighting Renault's dedication to environmentally friendly practices.
In 2025, the Tangier plant successfully produced nearly 300,000 vehicles. Together with the Somaca plant in Casablanca, Renault has surpassed a production milestone of 394,000 cars in Morocco, establishing the country as its second-largest global manufacturing hub by volume. As a result, Morocco has emerged as a key player in the Renault Group's strategic operations, with the northern region of the kingdom being described as one of the most dynamic automotive ecosystems.
