Revolutionizing Water Supply: Moroccan Engineers' Ingenious Solution to Save Marrakech

Innovative Water Highways: A New Era for Marrakech

The imminent connection of Marrakech to the Safi desalination plant represents a pivotal moment in the region's fight against water scarcity. This strategic infrastructure project, which involves an investment of 4.3 billion dirhams funded by the government, is set to provide potable water to over 1.5 million residents, establishing a sustainable solution to the ongoing regional water stress. Designed by Moroccan engineers, this ambitious initiative introduces the concept of "water highways," which consists of a network of steel pipes stretching nearly 185 kilometers. This extensive pipeline will transport treated seawater from the OCP facilities in Safi, passing through three major pumping stations before arriving at the Ramram basin. This central reservoir, with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters located just five kilometers north of the city, will manage the water volumes before they are redistributed to the population.

Currently nearing completion at approximately 98%, this technical infrastructure offers an immediate response to climate-induced emergencies. The Marrakech area has been severely impacted by recurring droughts, exacerbated by rapid population growth and a tourism sector that heavily demands water resources. The newly established hydraulic corridor is expected to deliver an impressive 100 million cubic meters of desalinated seawater annually, aligning with royal directives aimed at increasing reliance on unconventional resources to mitigate structural deficits in water supply.

Ensuring Sustainable Water Management

On the ground, the final distribution of water to users will be managed by the regional multi-service company of Marrakech-Safi. According to Adil Daoudi, the deputy general manager, the primary goal of this project is to create an "additional, sustainable, and secure source of supply." This comprehensive reform in the management of drinking water, electricity, and sanitation is designed to support the region's economic development while ensuring its water security for decades to come. The project symbolizes a significant leap forward in Morocco's efforts to combat severe drought conditions and aligns with broader national strategies aimed at enhancing water supply resilience, particularly in light of climate change challenges.
