Monthly Increase in Consumer Prices in Morocco

In August 2026, Morocco experienced a 0.8% increase in consumer prices compared to July, primarily driven by higher costs for essential goods. According to the High Commission for Planning (_Haut-Commissariat au Plan_, HCP), this rise was largely attributed to a 0.9% increase in the food index and a 0.7% rise in the non-food index. Notably, between July and August, prices for fish and seafood, as well as dairy products, cheese, and eggs, surged by 2.8%. Additionally, meat prices increased by 2.2%, vegetables by 1.0%, and beverages like coffee, tea, and cocoa by 0.3%. Conversely, fruit prices saw a decline of 1.9% during the same period.

Regional Variations and Yearly Trends

The most significant price hikes in the non-food category were observed in fuel prices, which surged by an astonishing 9.8% compared to the previous month. The HCP reported that the highest increases in the consumer price index were recorded in Al-Hoceima at 1.6% and Agadir at 1.4%. Other cities such as Tétouan, Safi, and Beni Mellal experienced increases of 1.2%, while Oujda and Fès recorded rises of 1.1% and 1.0%, respectively. In Tangier, prices rose by 0.9%, while Rabat, Settat, and Errachidia reported an increase of 0.8%. Casablanca and Kénitra had the smallest price increases, each at 0.5%.

In contrast to August 2025, the consumer price index in August 2026 saw a slight decline of 0.3%. This relief was attributed to a significant decrease of 3.9% in the food price index year-on-year, while non-food prices rose by 2.5% over the same period. Within the non-food category, fluctuations varied, with communication experiencing a minor decline of 0.2% and transportation witnessing a notable increase of 7.3%.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile prices and government-regulated tariffs, increased by 0.2% in August 2026 compared to July. Year-on-year, it saw a modest rise of 0.1%. The trajectory of prices in the coming months is expected to be significantly influenced by fluctuations in international commodity and energy markets.
