Sean Penn to Direct Film on Capitol Riot Featuring Bradley Cooper

Three-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn is set to take the helm as director for an upcoming film that will focus on a police officer involved in the tumultuous events of January 6, 2021, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. According to entertainment media reports released on Tuesday, this gripping narrative will also see Penn taking on writing responsibilities, with the renowned Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper expected to portray the unnamed officer at the center of the story.

This film is anticipated to begin production next year and is being developed by Warner Bros., the studio responsible for producing Penn's most recent Oscar-winning project, One Battle After Another. The Capitol riot remains a significant and contentious issue within American society, having unfolded when thousands of Trump supporters attempted to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's presidential election victory.

Despite the outcome of the 2020 election being widely accepted, Trump has persistently claimed that he was the rightful winner, labeling the individuals who participated in the Capitol assault as “patriots.” He has even extended pardons and commutations to some of those who have confessed to assaulting law enforcement during the chaos.

Penn, known for his progressive political views and commitment to social activism, has actively engaged in discussions surrounding the January 6 insurrection. He was seen attending legislative hearings that investigated the events of that day, where he was photographed alongside officers who faced the violent mob, including Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges. Fanone, a former supporter of Trump, has bravely shared his experiences and the lasting trauma he endured during the uprising, documented in his 2022 memoir, Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop’s Battle for America’s Soul.

In a related note, Warner Bros. is currently on the brink of a merger with Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison, who is the son of Larry Ellison, a known ally of Trump.
