Senegal's Culinary Team Gears Up for Bocuse d'Or Africa 2023

Senegal's Representation at the Bocuse d'Or Africa

Dakar, September 2 (APS) – The National Federation of Chefs of Senegal (FENACS) has proudly announced the formation of a talented team comprising three culinary experts—two pastry chefs and one gastronomic chef—to represent Senegal at the continental phase of the Bocuse d'Or. This prestigious event is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 24 in Agadir, Morocco. The anticipation surrounding this competition is palpable, as the team aims to showcase Senegal's rich culinary heritage and secure a spot in the grand finale of the Bocuse d'Or in Lyon, France.

The federation's statement emphasizes the significance of this event, calling it a “major new challenge” on the African gastronomic scene, encapsulated by the slogan “Our terroir, our talent, our pride.” The Senegalese culinary team, often referred to as the “lions of gastronomy,” is driven by a passionate desire to shine on this continental stage. They are rallying for the unwavering support of Senegalese fans, echoing the rallying cry: “Manko wutti ndam li” (Together for victory in Wolof).

The Team and Their Ambitions

The Senegalese team is led by Chef Victor Bassène Gassama, who specializes in gastronomy and is tasked with creating the main dish that will highlight the authenticity of Senegalese flavors and cooking techniques. In the pastry segment, Chefs Mbaye Mousse Diop and Matar Thiam will be responsible for crafting desserts, focusing on the balance and aesthetic presentation of their plates. These talented chefs were selected following a fiercely contested Bocuse d'Or Senegal event held in April at Saly Portudal, which showcased the remarkable skills of Senegal's culinary professionals.

Supporting the team is head coach Youssoupha Diémé, alongside team spokesperson Ndèye Sokhna Lo, who is also responsible for promoting the Bocuse d'Or Senegal initiative. Through their participation in this competition, the Senegalese team seeks to demonstrate the expertise, creativity, and excellence inherent in the nation's culinary professionals, while also highlighting the exceptional richness of Senegal's culinary heritage.

According to the federation, the competitors will face highly technical challenges that require precision, creativity, mastery, and endurance, all while managing their time effectively. “Beyond the competition, this journey serves as a true showcase for Senegal,” the National Federation of Chefs of Senegal underscores, highlighting the broader implications of their participation in this prestigious culinary contest.
