Significant Increase in Grain Storage Capacities in Morocco

Overview of Grain Storage Developments in Morocco

The overall grain storage capacities in Morocco have witnessed a remarkable increase, reaching a total of 68.7 million quintals by the end of 2025, compared to approximately 60 million quintals at the close of 2024. The Casablanca-Settat region continues to lead the country in terms of storage capacity. According to data from the National Office for Professional Grain and Pulses (ONICL), storage entities contribute significantly to the nation's grain storage capabilities, with a total of 43.29 million quintals from storage organizations. This is followed by industrial mills, which account for 17.30 million quintals, and compound feed operators with around 8.12 million quintals.

Modernization of Storage Facilities

Furthermore, the data highlights a continuous modernization trend in storage mechanisms, with over 40 percent of the storage capacity in the country now relying on advanced silo systems. This transition ensures high-quality preservation standards over extended periods. Nationwide, there are approximately 169 warehouses dedicated to grain storage, with both the Casablanca-Settat and Fes-Meknes regions featuring prominently, each hosting 56 warehouses, which represents 33 percent of the national total. The Rabat-Salé-Kenitra and Oriental regions follow with 14 and 13 warehouses, respectively.

The Souss-Massa region comprises 12 warehouses, while the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region has 8. Additionally, both the Marrakech-Safi and Beni Mellal-Khenifra regions have 5 warehouses each. An analysis of the data reveals a shift among industry players towards adopting large-scale storage units, as 50 percent of the national warehouses exceed a storage capacity of 170,000 quintals, with the average national warehouse capacity being 265,000 quintals.

In terms of actual storage volume, the Casablanca-Settat region ranks first with storage capacities reaching 19 million quintals, accounting for 44 percent of the national capacity. Following this, the Fes-Meknes region has a capacity of 11 million quintals, representing 26 percent of the national storage capacity. The ONICL has previously indicated flexible procedures allowing professionals to lease their excess storage capacities or make them available to other operators under a system known as "temporary storage." This mechanism enabled the mobilization of an additional storage capacity of 16 million quintals during the 2025 storage year, distributed across approximately 44 warehouses nationwide.
