Spain Prepares for Extreme Heat Conditions
On Saturday, July 18, 2026, the Spanish Meteorological Agency announced the impending arrival of a third heat wave, set to commence this coming Tuesday. This new wave is anticipated to push temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius across many regions of the country. The agency indicated that an area of stable high pressure is responsible for trapping hot and dry air from North Africa over Spain for several days, which will lead to exceedingly high temperatures. The heat is predicted to intensify through Thursday, with some areas possibly experiencing temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have issued warnings that the risk level will be elevated during the hottest daytime hours, especially for outdoor activities and vulnerable groups. This summer, Spain has already faced two significant heat waves, one occurring in late June, which shattered temperature records throughout Europe, and another in early July. Furthermore, last Tuesday, the meteorological agency reported that the mainland of Spain recorded its hottest summer start since data collection began in 1961. Tragically, a massive wildfire that broke out in July 2026 in the Almería province (southeast Spain) resulted in the loss of 13 lives.
