Key Developments in African Data Protection Collaboration
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing regional collaboration in data protection by signing two pivotal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the data protection authorities from Morocco and The Gambia. This initiative aims to bolster cross-border cooperation in data governance and privacy enforcement, reflecting a commitment to establishing robust data protection standards across Africa.
The agreements were formalized during the 2026 Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA-RAPDP) Conference and Annual General Meeting, which convened in Abidjan. The NDPC collaborated with the Commission Nationale de contrôle de la protection des Données à caractère Personnel (CNDP) of Morocco and the Gambia Information Commission, signaling a unified approach to enhancing legal assistance, information sharing, and knowledge exchange. These partnerships are designed to facilitate more effective enforcement and harmonization of data protection laws across different jurisdictions, which is increasingly crucial in today's interconnected digital landscape.
During the signing ceremony, NDPC National Commissioner and CEO Vincent Olatunji emphasized the vital role of regulatory cooperation in fostering an interconnected digital economy. He pointed out that such agreements are instrumental in building trust, enhancing compliance, and boosting investor confidence within African digital markets. This collaborative effort not only strengthens the legal framework surrounding data protection but also promotes a secure environment for consumers and businesses alike.
The formal signing of the MoUs was conducted by Omar Seghrouchni, representing Morocco’s CNDP, and Nene MacDouall-Gaye on behalf of The Gambia. The NDPC views these agreements as a substantial advancement towards achieving deeper regional alignment in data protection standards and regulatory collaboration across the African continent.
