The Moroccan ambassador in Nouakchott, Hamid Shbar, emphasized the critical role that both Mauritania and Morocco are expected to play in fostering stability and development within their regional sphere, particularly given their strategic geographical positions as connectors between various regions. During a celebration held by the embassy to mark the 27th anniversary of the Throne Day, Shbar described the economic prospects between the two nations as 'promising.' He attributed this optimism to the political and security stability in both countries, which positions them as reliable partners in the eyes of international collaborators.
Shbar highlighted the fruitful partnership between Morocco and Mauritania, pointing out significant initiatives such as the electric interconnection project and the gas pipeline project through the Atlantic African Gas Pipeline (Nigeria-Morocco). In addition, he mentioned ongoing projects related to road, maritime, digital, and air connectivity, noting that the number of flights between the two countries has seen a remarkable increase. He confirmed that preparations are underway for the ninth session of the Joint Higher Committee between the two countries, set to take place in the coming months.
In his speech, he also acknowledged Mauritania's diplomatic presence on the international stage, which has been marked by its presidency of the African Union and successful nominations of Mauritanian figures to prestigious positions within international and regional organizations. He underscored Mauritania's pivotal role in promoting stability in its surrounding region.
Furthermore, Ambassador Shbar revealed that Morocco allocates over 300 scholarships annually for Mauritanian students, with plans for further increases through the provision of additional educational seats. To date, Moroccan universities have graduated around 30,000 Mauritanian students across various disciplines and generations. These graduates now occupy significant positions in both the public and private sectors, reflecting the success of this educational collaboration, which has placed Mauritania at the forefront in the Arab and African contexts in terms of benefiting from Moroccan scholarships for foreign students pursuing higher education.
Shbar discussed the elevation of academic cooperation, highlighting Morocco's commitment to supporting Mauritania in establishing universities dedicated to engineering training, as well as two institutes focused on agricultural and veterinary sciences. He also mentioned Morocco's assistance through the Vocational Training Office in helping Mauritania establish vocational training centers.
Finally, Hamid Shbar commended the pioneering role played by the Moroccan Cultural Center in Nouakchott in bolstering cultural cooperation between the two countries, embodying the collaboration in the realms of thought, knowledge, and the arts.
