Floods Claim Lives and Cause Extensive Damage in Chichaoua

In a heartbreaking incident over the weekend, four individuals tragically lost their lives due to severe flooding in the Moroccan province of Chichaoua. Local news reports indicate that the rural community of Amzouda was particularly hard-hit by a wave of intense rainfall followed by flash floods. Among the victims was a young girl from the village of Tamazirt, who was swept away by the raging waters and ultimately drowned.

In addition to the significant loss of life, the flooding resulted in extensive property damage. Numerous homes and businesses were either damaged or completely inundated by the torrential waters. Livestock, too, were caught in the floodwaters, leading to further losses for local farmers. Nearby, in the village of Ihsaïnten, part of the Zaouia Nahlia municipality, rivers known as wadis overflowed their banks and infiltrated residential buildings.

Meteorological Warnings Preceded the Catastrophe

This catastrophic weather event did not come without warning. The Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) had issued alerts prior to the weekend, forecasting severe thunderstorms, heavy hail, and local gusty winds affecting multiple provinces across the country. The warnings were not only applicable to Chichaoua but also covered the provinces of Al Haouz, Marrakesh, Agadir, Ouarzazate, Tata, and other regions within the High and Middle Atlas and southern parts of Morocco.

Local emergency services and authorities are currently securing the affected areas while assessing the extent of the damage. It remains uncertain whether additional rainfall in the mountainous regions will pose further risks in the coming days.
