Tragic Crash of KC-135 Stratotanker in Iraq Claims Lives of Six Crew Members

A Devastating Incident in the Skies over Iraq

On March 12, a tragic accident occurred when a KC-135 Stratotanker, part of the US Air Force, crashed in western Iraq during a combat mission associated with Operation "Epic Fury." The incident resulted in the loss of all six crew members on board. Among the deceased was Technical Sergeant Tyler H. Simmons, a 28-year-old who hailed from Columbus, Ohio. Simmons served as a boom operator in the 166th Air Refueling Squadron, which is part of the 121st Air Refueling Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, based at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base.

The Pentagon confirmed on March 15 that the crash took place within friendly airspace and was not the result of hostile fire or a friendly fire incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the aircraft may have sustained damage to its tail during an aerial refueling operation, although a thorough investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
