Returning to Morocco: A Journey to Water Management Innovation

After spending years abroad, I always felt a sense of incompleteness, despite my involvement in impactful projects. The opportunity to develop a project in Morocco brings me a unique sense of fulfillment, as I am contributing to a sector where the need is evident. Agadir stands out as a region where water reuse is gaining traction, particularly in hotels, golf courses, and green spaces. However, it is crucial for industries to adopt these sustainable solutions as well.

During a discussion in Silicon Valley, I learned about a market estimated to be worth one trillion dollars, and the potential to capture even a small fraction of it was highlighted. While the market size is enticing, my focus is on making a meaningful impact in the region and transforming our approach to water management.

Leveraging Technopark Agadir for Entrepreneurial Success

The journey began in May 2025 when a friend connected me with the team at Technopark, believing that my idea could yield tangible results. The team showed confidence in my project and helped me refine my value proposition for presentation to regional authorities. This experience taught me that, despite my strong technical background, I still needed to enhance my understanding of business and commercial aspects.

Technopark and the Cité de l’Innovation Souss-Massa provided crucial mentorship and access to an influential regional network, allowing me to connect with key stakeholders and investors. What impressed me most was their pragmatic approach to solutions, always ready to assist in advancing each proposal. This support has been instrumental in my entrepreneurial journey.

It was around 2023 or 2024, following a royal speech that highlighted the pressing water issues in Morocco, that I realized the potential for wastewater treatment and reuse as a business opportunity. I began to explore how I could apply my expertise in service of this vital cause. My aim was not merely to discuss water scarcity but to take concrete action. With the technical skills, professional experience, and connections to potential suppliers already in place, the final piece was forming a team that believed in the project and began turning the idea into a viable enterprise.

Our ambition at SITELI CW is to transform wastewater into a valuable resource. We aim to address a critical issue that existing infrastructures have yet to resolve: how to give water a second life. For years, we have engaged in discussions about recycling materials like plastic, yet water reuse has only recently begun to gain attention.

We are currently working on a pilot project with one of Morocco's largest agricultural companies in the northern region, focusing on how they can maintain access to irrigation water year-round. At present, the company stores water, but its quality can deteriorate over time. Our proposal involves treating this water to keep it suitable for irrigation throughout the year, thereby strengthening resilience and supporting their revenue streams.

The same principle can be applied across various industries. Water used in industrial processes or cleaning operations can be treated and reused rather than discarded. This approach not only reduces the consumption of freshwater but also lowers costs and enhances production resilience. Sustainability has transcended being just a corporate image issue; adopting sustainable practices can also yield significant savings, which lies at the core of our value proposition.

Our solution comprises a physical treatment system coupled with a software platform. We begin by analyzing the type of contamination present in the water and the processes it has undergone, then configure the treatment accordingly. The software provides clients with visibility into their water consumption, contamination levels, flow rates, pressure, and other indicators necessary for evaluating system performance.

Our approach is decentralized, compact, and modular. Traditional wastewater treatment plants often require extensive land and significant construction, which is not feasible for many factories. We offer comparable treatment capacity in a much smaller footprint, enabling the integration of our systems into existing facilities. Treated water can be stored in tanks or reused immediately.

We strive to deliver our solutions within 48 hours after reaching an agreement with the client, conducting tests, and designing the appropriate system.

Mobile and modular treatment units are particularly advantageous for industries with limited space, as the equipment can be integrated into their facilities without requiring major construction. Another application lies in residential projects. Complexes generate blackwater, which needs advanced treatment, as well as greywater from showers, sinks, and similar sources. If these flows are separated at the design stage, our system can treat greywater for reuse in garden irrigation and green areas.

It is ideal for developers to consider this from the outset of construction. Cities and infrastructures in Morocco are rapidly growing, and integrating water reuse from the beginning is more efficient than adding costly solutions later on.

Currently, SITELI CW is in the pilot phase, preparing a project with one of Morocco's largest agricultural companies to validate our technology and treatment unit. Our aim is to move away from the model of developing customized systems for each client. Instead, we want to offer a ready-to-deploy product that addresses identified and mapped problems. We have received nine letters of intent from organizations interested in our technology, demonstrating a market for our solution.

As a startup with a limited team, we are taking a step-by-step approach. We cannot open multiple fronts simultaneously; our initial goal is to establish ourselves in one market, prove the relevance of our solution there, and then gradually expand into other industries.

Having lived and worked in the Netherlands and Morocco, I have observed significant differences in their approaches to water management. The Dutch have an established method known as the 'diamond perspective,' where businesses, universities, public institutions, and society engage collaboratively to tackle major social challenges. The community aspect is perhaps the most critical because citizens must understand the ethical value of water beyond its economic implications.

I strive to apply this approach in Morocco by collaborating with Wavemakers United, a Dutch organization that has become international, aiming to raise public awareness about water, especially among children. I am also involved with the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie at Ibn Tofail University, where we aspire to conduct deeper research into water reuse in Morocco. By connecting technical research, corporate engagement, and public awareness, I hope to help build the necessary cooperation to effectively address Morocco's water challenges.
