The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a "public health emergency of international concern." This declaration follows a notable increase in infection rates and an elevated risk of the virus spreading across borders. The active strain responsible for this outbreak is identified as the Bundibugyo virus, which currently lacks an approved vaccine, raising serious concerns regarding containment efforts.

The WHO emphasized that the situation remains manageable, provided that health surveillance and contact tracing measures are rapidly enhanced. This includes bolstering local healthcare systems with essential medical supplies and personnel to effectively address the crisis. Health expert Tayeb Hamdi highlighted the importance of international collaboration in mitigating the epidemic at its source and preventing further transmission. He pointed out that this is not the first instance where the virus has prompted a global emergency declaration, indicating its persistent threat.

Hamdi noted the historical context of the Ebola virus, referencing previous outbreaks in the DRC and West Africa, which resulted in significant fatalities. Unlike the more familiar Zaire strain, which was somewhat manageable due to the availability of vaccines and treatments, the Bundibugyo strain currently circulating presents a more formidable challenge due to the absence of approved preventive measures. The WHO's ongoing concern stems from the fact that this strain is spreading in a volatile border region, where the outbreak is already extending into neighboring countries, exacerbated by high mobility among mining workers and ongoing regional conflicts that obstruct containment efforts and lead to population displacement.

The fatality rate for the Bundibugyo strain is alarmingly high, at approximately 50%. Initial symptoms include fever and joint pain, which can escalate to diarrhea, vomiting, hemorrhage, and skin rashes. The highest risk of transmission occurs during burial practices, where the deceased can harbor significant viral loads, facilitating the spread of infection through contact with bodily fluids.

In relation to Morocco, Hamdi emphasized that the country has taken proactive measures in light of its strong connections to sub-Saharan Africa and the role of Mohammed V International Airport as a significant transit hub. Strict monitoring protocols have been established at airports and border crossings, including aircraft disinfection and mandatory health declarations for passengers arriving from high-risk areas within the past 21 days, corresponding to the virus’s incubation period.

Virologist Mustapha Ennaji, a member of the COVID-19 scientific vaccination committee, provided insights into the history of the Ebola virus, which was first identified in 1976 in the DRC, named after a nearby river. Ennaji cautioned that the virus is not limited to the DRC, as past outbreaks have also occurred in countries such as Nigeria and Sierra Leone, with isolated cases reported outside Africa, including in the United States. He characterized Ebola as a highly lethal disease that induces acute hemorrhagic fever, often leading to death. However, he noted that vaccines and treatments have been developed for certain strains, with some patients managing to recover.

Addressing the situation within Morocco, Ennaji reassured that the country has not recorded any confirmed cases of Ebola since the virus was first identified, with infections historically remaining largely confined to Central and West Africa.
