Zinnekes Embark on a Journey to Casablanca

The Zinnekes, a distinguished rugby veterans team, are preparing for an exciting trip to Casablanca, Morocco, where they will participate in the 14th edition of the COC Rugby International Veterans Tournament on Saturday, June 6. Following their recent experience at the Bangkok 10’s, this journey marks another chapter in their rich history. The team, known for its legendary roster, features notable players such as Massimi, Verschelden, Larose, Tollet, Smet, Brebant, and Van Pestel, all set to showcase their skills and camaraderie on the rugby field.

A Diverse and Talented Squad

The Zinnekes will field a remarkable intergenerational team consisting of 26 participants, including former international players, young retirees from the sport, and seasoned veterans who continue to play actively in Belgium. This tournament promises to be a reunion of sorts, as many players return to the field that shaped their rugby journey. Mohamed Chouaf, the President of the Zinnekes association, emphasizes the inclusive spirit of the team, stating, "With the Zinnekes, we want to foster inclusivity while enjoying moments of athleticism that unite us on the same fields, be it as opponents or teammates, forging friendships that endure through time."

Among the iconic players making a comeback are international veterans Julien Massimi and Mathieu Verschelden from ASUB, alongside Guillaume Brebant from RC Frameries. The roster also includes rugby legends Philippe Tollet, Jean Smet, and Stéphane Larose from BRC, alongside distinguished representatives from RSC Anderlecht, including Khalid Aouadi and Alexandre Van Pestel. Simon Marote will play a dual role as both player and coach, leading the team as they embark on this nostalgic pilgrimage to the roots of their rugby careers. Renowned supporters, such as Marc Brassine, Paul Delvaux, and Philippe Lalli, will accompany the team, further enhancing the camaraderie.

The Zinnekes are not merely participating in the tournament; they aim to make a significant impact alongside clubs from France and Morocco. The association is also looking to expand its reach by exploring participation in additional tournaments and plans to establish a women’s section based on the same inclusive principles in the near future. This initiative reflects their commitment to fostering a vibrant rugby community.
