Artistic Perspectives on Adapting Malhoun into Theatrical Performances Discussed in Marrakech

Exploring the Artistic Horizons of Malhoun in Theatrical Adaptations

Recently, Marrakech hosted a thought-provoking meeting titled "Malhoun and Theatre: From the Poetic Realm to the Aesthetic Stage," which brought together researchers and critics to delve into the artistic opportunities presented by Malhoun poetry in the creation of theatrical performances. This event was organized by the House of Poetry (Dar Chiir) in Marrakech, in collaboration with the Cheikh Jilali Mtired Association and the digital university library affiliated with Cadi Ayyad University. The conference aimed to discuss ways to transpose Malhoun poetry from the realm of song to the theatrical stage through the interplay of poetry, interpretation, and music. The discussions highlighted the potential for exploring new forms of performance and audience engagement to bring this rich heritage closer to a broader public. Participants referenced various Moroccan experiences that have successfully integrated the art of Malhoun into theatrical productions, including works by Abdelssalam Chraïbi, such as "Al Harraz" and "Sidi Kaddour Alami." Contributions from Abdellah Mouaoui, who has documented the theatrical memory of Marrakech and Morocco, were also acknowledged, alongside Abdelmajid Fennich's ventures into "Malhoun Theatre" and the "Theatre of Malhoun." These efforts illustrate a vibrant commitment to celebrating and revitalizing this important aspect of Moroccan culture.
