Controversy Surrounds Rachid Cherkab's Sentencing in Casablanca, Morocco

Rachid Cherkab Sentenced: Legal Concerns Raised in Casablanca

Rachid Cherkab, a medical professional and university professor, has recently been sentenced to one year in prison by the Aïn Sebaâ correctional court in Casablanca, Morocco. This ruling has sparked significant debate regarding the integrity of the judicial process and the concept of a fair trial. Cherkab was convicted on charges of defamation and impersonation, leading to his immediate arrest following the verdict. The court also mandated that Cherkab, alongside two other defendants, pay a total compensation of one million dirhams to the Casablanca-Settat health authority.

Mohamed El Ghaloussi, the president of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds, has publicly condemned Cherkab's arrest, claiming it undermines the principles of a fair trial and presumption of innocence, especially considering the option for an appeal against the verdict. El Ghaloussi pointed out that Cherkab had previously filed multiple complaints regarding alleged corruption and mismanagement at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital, suggesting that his legal troubles may be tied to these whistleblower actions. Despite his attempts to bring these issues to light, he felt that his concerns were inadequately addressed by the authorities.

In a statement, El Ghaloussi highlighted that the Casablanca-Center regional section of the association had received a plea for assistance from Cherkab. He noted that on May 5, the section president submitted a request to the Attorney General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal, urging for a swift investigation into the allegations of corruption within the hospital's administration. This context raises questions about the treatment of whistleblowers in Morocco and whether adequate measures are in place to protect individuals who expose misconduct.

Furthermore, El Ghaloussi recalled that Cherkab had been summoned for questioning by the National Brigade of Judicial Police back in 2024, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations into the complaints regarding hospital management. He advocated for the court to re-evaluate Cherkab's legal standing, particularly in light of the appeal process, asserting that it is essential for him to be allowed to continue his work in a professional and secure environment, free from undue pressure.
