Fez, Morocco Welcomes First State-Funded Jewish Culture Museum in the Arab World

Historic Opening of the Jewish Culture Museum in Fez, Morocco

The vibrant city of Fez, Morocco, has taken a significant step towards cultural inclusivity with the grand opening of the new Jewish Culture Museum on October 12. This groundbreaking institution marks a historic moment as it is the first museum in an Arab Muslim country to receive public funding specifically dedicated to Jewish culture. Spanning an impressive 1,700 square meters, the museum invites visitors to delve into the rich tapestry of Jewish life in Morocco, showcasing the enduring legacy of Judaism in the region, as highlighted by the National Foundation of Museums (FNM) of Morocco.

Within its walls, the museum boasts a diverse and extensive collection that features ritual and everyday objects, archaeological findings, ethnographic artifacts, artistic pieces, rare manuscripts, and crafts. These items collectively represent the traditions, practices, and testimonies that have been passed down through 2,500 years of Jewish history in Morocco.

Exploring Jewish Religious Heritage and Community Life

Local media reports indicate that the exhibition halls of the museum explore various community institutions such as synagogues, Hebrew schools, and rabbinical courts, alongside traditions associated with births, Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, funerals, and religious holidays. Visitors can expect to see an array of significant artifacts including Torah scrolls, prayer shawls (talitot), marriage contracts, circumcision chairs, bridal attire, and intricate jewelry.

Furthermore, the museum emphasizes traditional craftsmanship, featuring reconstructed jewelry workshops, tools, silver ornaments, textiles, regional clothing, and musical instruments. To enhance the visitor experience, audiovisual and digital installations complement the collections, and dedicated spaces are set aside for educational activities aimed at children and school groups.

The museum's exterior is adorned with a brass inscription in four languages: Arabic, Amazigh, Hebrew, and French, symbolizing its commitment to cultural diversity. The project was undertaken with the active involvement of the Moroccan Jewish community, particularly under the guidance of Serge Berdugo, the founding president of the Foundation for Moroccan Jewish Cultural Heritage.

King Mohammed VI championed the establishment of the museum during his visit to Fez in April 2019, as part of a broader initiative to rehabilitate and enhance the historic medina (old city), where the Mellah, the former Jewish quarter, is located. The FNM emphasizes that the museum reflects King Mohammed VI's vision, which places great importance on preserving and promoting all components of Moroccan identity, celebrating its diversity and complementarity.

The construction of the museum was completed in March 2023 by ADER-Fez in consultation with the FNM. The inauguration was attended by prominent figures including the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq; the wali (regional governor) of the Fez-Meknes region, Khalid Aït Taleb; Serge Berdugo; the president of the FNM, Mehdi Qotbi; as well as ambassadors and university rectors.
