Morocco Emerges as a Key Player in the Copper Market with New Mining Opportunities

In a significant development for the Moroccan mining sector, Talisman Metals has recently secured three new exploration licenses near its Tirzzit copper project, located approximately 225 km east of Agadir, Morocco. This expansion has resulted in a remarkable increase in the licensed area, growing by 2.8 times. The CEO of Talisman Metals, Tim McCutcheon, expressed optimism about these new areas, stating they present 'more opportunities to discover mineral deposits and to extend the mapped mineralized zones westward.' The geological assessments in the region suggest favorable conditions for copper and silver mineralization at depth, positioning Morocco as an increasingly vital player in the global copper market.

Prior to this expansion, Talisman had initiated a drilling program in the original license area, which included a total of 33 planned drill holes with a cumulative length of 2,770 meters. As of September 11, 187 meters had been completed, revealing notable copper mineralization through visible malachite, a copper-bearing mineral. McCutcheon emphasized the importance of Morocco's initiatives to facilitate new licenses for companies, thereby enhancing the country's role as a significant supplier poised for future supply growth in the copper market.

The demand for copper, particularly in key sectors, has led to concerns regarding a persistent supply deficit. A report from S&P Global indicates that between 2020 and 2025, 36 new copper mines are set to commence operations globally, with eleven of these located in Africa, where high-grade deposits with copper content of 2-4% are prevalent. While the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia currently dominate the pipeline with high-grade deposits, Morocco is also expanding its copper pipeline, spanning from early exploration to commercial mining production.

Morocco's appeal lies in its long-standing mining tradition, well-developed transport and energy infrastructure, and proximity to European markets, making it a competitive choice for investment decisions. A significant milestone for Morocco's copper sector occurred in 2025 with the commencement of operations at the Tizert mine in the Taroudant province of the High Atlas region. Owned by the nearly century-old Managem mining company based in Casablanca, Tizert represents a substantial investment of $440 million, boasting 1.068 billion tons of resources and 600 million tons of reserves, with an estimated mine life of 18 years.

Managem announced that the production capacity of 107,000 tons of copper concentrate per year will significantly contribute to Morocco's national copper needs, bolstering the country's self-sufficiency in this critical metal for the energy transition. Future mine developments are expected to enhance Morocco's copper exports as well.

The Tizert mine serves as a model for the mining strategies the group aims to implement in the coming decades. Its significance extends beyond copper content; it demonstrates that modern mining projects can successfully reach production levels in Morocco. As Talisman Metals continues its exploration efforts, the completion of the drilling program at the original license area, along with geological mapping and rock sampling on the newly acquired areas, will further solidify Morocco's place in the global copper landscape.

Furthermore, the upcoming milestone for the Moroccan copper sector could be marked by Red Rock Mining, which is developing the Idelsane project in the Ouarzazate region. The mineral resource certification program is nearing completion, with results anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2026. CEO Richard Khoury noted that recently discovered zones could significantly expand the open-pit mining area, emphasizing their priority in completing certification and preparing for copper concentrate production starting in 2027.

Additionally, the Polish mining company KGHM Polska Miedź has shown considerable interest in entering the Moroccan market. In March, the copper and silver producer signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mining (ONHYM) and Managem to explore opportunities for the development of resource projects in Morocco, with further discussions taking place in early October.

As Talisman Metals advances its exploratory projects in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, focusing on underexplored regions rich in geological potential, it embodies a growing trend in the country's mining industry. The ongoing drilling results could serve as a catalyst for re-evaluation, highlighting Morocco's emerging significance in the global copper and silver markets.
