Marrakech Hosts Innovative Challenge to Transform Ideas into Projects for Southern Provinces

Marrakech Launches Moroccan Sahara Innovation Challenge

The vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco, is currently the focal point of innovation and entrepreneurship as it hosts the inaugural edition of the Moroccan Sahara Innovation Challenge. Kicking off on October 26, this initiative aims to foster the development of projects that address the specific needs of the Southern provinces of the country. Spearheaded by Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) along with its partners, the challenge integrates research, entrepreneurial spirit, and territorial development into its core mission.

Timed to coincide with the significant celebration of the *Fête de l’Unité* and the commemoration of the *Marche Verte*, this competition brings together a diverse group of participants, including students, doctoral candidates, researchers, startups, and young entrepreneurs from across Morocco. The primary goal of the event is to bridge the gap between theoretical ideas cultivated in academic settings and their practical applications in the field.

Focus Areas and Future Impacts

Participants in the Moroccan Sahara Innovation Challenge are encouraged to explore six key domains: blue economy; water, renewable energies, and green transition; agriculture, food, and bioresources; mobility, logistics, and smart territories; culture, tourism, and sports; as well as entrepreneurship and emerging value chains. Notably, there is a strong emphasis on solutions that will enhance connectivity between the Southern provinces and both Africa and the Atlantic region, with the adaptability of these solutions to other territories also being a crucial focus of the challenge.

During the launch event, UCA President Belaid Bougadir expressed his vision of establishing this competition as a long-term initiative. El Hassan El Mouden, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences Semlalia, highlighted the importance of transforming research efforts into tangible projects that provide young people with opportunities in entrepreneurship. Following the kickoff, participating teams will take part in intensive training sessions and individualized support at the *Cité de l’Innovation de Marrakech* on October 27. The final presentations to the jury are scheduled for October 28, with an awards ceremony set to take place on October 31 in Laâyoune.

Apart from financial rewards, the winners and the most promising projects will receive one year of support to help further their development. Additionally, a special jury award will be given to a particularly original proposal with significant potential for impact.
