Financial Struggles of Moroccan Government Television
In a troubling revelation for the Moroccan entertainment landscape, the state-run television channels, managed by the National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT) and 2M, have reported staggering financial losses amounting to 487 million dirhams. This decline in financial health comes despite a notable 53% increase in revenues from the media support tax, which raises questions about the operational efficiency of these public broadcasters. In 2025 alone, SNRT faced a significant setback, recording a loss of 131 million dirhams against an investment of 197 million dirhams, indicating a substantial gap between income and expenditures.
Further compounding the issue, 2M, which commands a significant share of the advertising market, reported that it captured 65.8% of advertising investments in 2025. However, this seemingly positive statistic is overshadowed by a 10% decline in commercial revenue, leading to a net loss of 356 million dirhams for the channel. This alarming trend raises concerns not only about the sustainability and future of public broadcasting in Morocco but also about its ability to compete with private broadcasters in an increasingly competitive media landscape.
The financial woes of Morocco's public television channels highlight the urgent need for strategic reforms and innovative approaches to enhance revenue generation, improve audience engagement, and ultimately ensure their viability in a rapidly changing media environment.
