Morocco's Investments in US Treasury Bonds Surge by Over a Billion Dollars

On October 20, 2026, reports emerged that Morocco has significantly increased its holdings in American Treasury bonds, with a remarkable rise of over a billion dollars within just four months. The total value of US Treasury securities owned by investors based in Morocco reached an impressive $4.9 billion, as revealed by new statistics published on October 16. This figure indicates a notable increase from $4.777 billion just a month earlier, showcasing Morocco's growing financial engagement with U.S. markets.

As of the end of August 2026, the exact amount of American public debt securities held by Moroccan investors stands at $4.906 billion. This data originates from the Treasury International Capital (TIC) program, which is managed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The acceleration in investments has been particularly pronounced since the spring, with the figures showing a steady climb from $3.846 billion in April to $4.181 billion in May and $4.603 billion in June, culminating in a total increase of $1.06 billion or 27.6% over this four-month span.

Net Purchases of $130 Million in August

The latest American statistics also shed light on the financial movements during this period. In August alone, Moroccan investors made net purchases totaling $130 million in U.S. Treasury securities, following previous months where net purchases were recorded at $179 million in July and $430 million in June. These U.S. Treasury securities are a crucial financial instrument, consisting of bonds and notes issued by Washington to finance its public debt. The value of these securities is influenced by interest rates and transactions within the financial markets, with the U.S. statistics measuring these assets at their market value.

The ranking of countries based on Treasury holdings is determined by the residency of the bondholders. Therefore, the $4.906 billion attributed to Morocco in these American statistics reflects positions held by various investor categories, not limited to the Moroccan central bank. This diversification in investment showcases Morocco's strategic positioning within the global financial landscape.
