Innovative 3D Model Creation of Agadir Using Russian Satellite Technology
A remarkable 3D model of the Moroccan city of Agadir has been successfully created using images captured by the Russian satellite InnoSat16, as reported by various media outlets. This groundbreaking achievement was made public on September 11, showcasing the advanced capabilities of satellite imaging technology.
The Russian company Geoscan employed satellite imagery alongside photogrammetry, a technology that reconstructs shapes and terrains from photographs, to produce this detailed 3D representation of Agadir. Additionally, these images facilitated the creation of a captivating video that simulates a flyover of the area, allowing viewers to experience Agadir from a unique perspective.
Geoscan has emphasized that this project highlights the satellite's guidance, orientation, and stabilization systems' ability to produce high-quality images, paving the way for more comprehensive territorial analysis from orbit. Launched on July 25, 2025, from the Vostotchny Cosmodrome in Russia, InnoSat16 is the country's first 16U CubeSat in orbit. Its primary payload includes a panchromatic camera developed by NPO Lepton, which captures black-and-white images of the Earth's surface with a resolution of 2.5 meters per pixel from approximately 500 kilometers above.
Since 2021, Geoscan has expanded its space operations, launching 17 small satellites dedicated to scientific experiments, communication technology testing, and Earth observation. This initiative not only underscores the potential of satellite technology in urban planning and development but also reflects the growing intersection of advanced technology and geographical analysis.
