Strategic Collaboration for Renewable Energy Expansion

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has taken a significant step towards enhancing Morocco's renewable energy landscape by appointing a consortium led by OWC, a renowned consultancy in the field of renewable energy. This collaboration marks the beginning of a comprehensive feasibility study aimed at establishing Morocco's inaugural offshore wind farm, a project that promises to bolster the nation’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

This innovative offshore wind initiative is endorsed by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), with a specific focus on the Atlantic coast near Essaouira, where the project is poised to harness the region's wind potential effectively. The consortium not only includes OWC but also a diverse array of specialized marine, environmental, and wind consultancies, alongside engineering and project management partners from Africa, Europe, and Morocco, such as PHENIXA, Gaïa Terre Bleue, NOVEC, and SOFECO.

Comprehensive Study for Informed Development Decisions

The feasibility study, which is set to unfold over two years, will be conducted under EIB’s contract AA-010864-002, with funding sourced from the Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership (FEMIP) Trust Fund. The scope of this study is extensive, encompassing offshore wind market analysis, supply chain evaluations, site selection services, and wind yield assessments through dedicated meteorological campaigns. Additionally, the consortium will develop a full offshore wind farm concept design, alongside conducting ports and logistics studies, risk analyses, and regulatory framework reviews.

Moreover, the study will integrate grid impact assessments and integration evaluations, which will be carried out in coordination with Moroccan grid specialists. This detailed approach aims to ensure that the project's execution is not only technically sound but also environmentally sustainable, as it will be complemented by comprehensive marine advisory, environmental, and social impact assessments.

Hakim Mouslim, OWC's regional director for Europe and North Africa, expressed the significance of this initiative, stating that it represents a major milestone in Morocco’s and Africa's renewable energy journey. He emphasized that OWC, alongside its consortium partners, is committed to supporting the EIB and MASEN in every facet of this groundbreaking project, from market analysis and technical assessments to geoscience, offshore wind design, and marine logistics. With the backing of their sister companies, OWC is well equipped to leverage its engineering and marine expertise to ensure the success of this pioneering initiative.

Leveraging its extensive pool of in-house offshore wind and engineering consultants based in France, the UK, and Germany, OWC is poised to deliver exceptional results for this project. The collaboration will also benefit from the marine expertise and the experience in ports and harbors provided by its sister company ABL, ensuring that all aspects of the development are meticulously planned and executed.
