Morocco's Pioneering Step in Battery Manufacturing
Morocco is on the brink of a significant advancement in its industrial landscape as it prepares to commence operations at its first mega lithium battery plant, situated in Kenitra. This landmark facility is being developed by the Chinese battery technology group, Gotion High-Tech, and is expected to herald a new era for the electric vehicle sector in Morocco, enhancing the country’s industrial value chain in this rapidly growing market. The strategic location of the plant is poised to connect Morocco with key markets in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, utilizing the nation’s abundant raw materials to support sustainable energy solutions.
Investment and Job Creation in the Electric Vehicle Sector
The state-of-the-art plant will initially focus on the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with a designed capacity of 20 GWh. These batteries are intended for the Moroccan market as well as for export to various countries across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and even the United States. The project, which officially began in June 2024, has already created over 400 jobs for local workers, many of whom have received specialized training at Gotion High-Tech’s facilities in China.
In terms of financial backing, the project has received a considerable investment of 12.8 billion Dirhams for its first phase, with potential total investments reaching up to 65 billion Dirhams as capacity expands to 100 GWh. This expansion is projected to generate approximately 17,000 direct and indirect jobs, including 2,300 positions that require high levels of professional expertise. The African Development Bank has also shown support by approving a €100 million loan for Gotion Power Maroc, with additional funds expected to be raised from financial partners.
Moreover, the collaboration between Gotion and the Volkswagen Group, alongside battery manufacturer PowerCo, to form joint ventures that include battery production facilities in Morocco, further reinforces the nation’s position as a future hub for electric vehicle manufacturing in Africa. This development not only signifies a commitment to technological advancement but also aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy and electric mobility.
