Morocco's Ambitious Solar Energy Initiative
In a significant move towards bolstering its renewable energy infrastructure, Morocco has officially launched a tender aiming to develop a minimum of 350 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity. This initiative is part of the NOOR PV Multisites program, which is designed to diversify and expand solar energy production across the nation. The tender was announced on October 19, 2026, and is open to engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) firms.
The call for qualification (RFQ) encompasses six installations, with individual capacities ranging from 40 MW to 170 MW, strategically located across five key regions: Casablanca-Settat, Béni Mellal-Khénifra, Marrakech-Safi, Souss-Massa, and Guelmim-Oued Noun. This geographic distribution aims to harness Morocco’s abundant solar potential, enhancing the national electricity system and contributing to the country's ambitious renewable energy goals.
Submission Details and Future Goals
Interested and qualified companies are invited to submit their applications by November 30, 2026. Detailed guidelines and requirements for the RFQ can be found on the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) official website. This initiative is part of Morocco's broader renewable energy strategy, which aims to increase the country's renewable energy capacity to over 15 GW by 2030, with a target for renewables to make up 52% of the national electricity mix. Furthermore, Morocco is committed to phasing out coal by 2040, enhancing energy storage solutions, strengthening the electricity grid, and improving regional energy interconnections.
As of the end of 2025, Morocco had successfully installed a total renewable energy capacity of 4.85 GW, which includes 546 MW of solar PV, as reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This latest tender is a crucial step towards achieving the nation's sustainability and energy goals.
