Health Alert Issued in Morocco Following Diphtheria Outbreak

Health Alert from the U.S. Embassy in Morocco

The United States Embassy in Morocco has issued a health alert in response to the detection of multiple diphtheria outbreaks within the kingdom. As of October 14, a total of fifteen confirmed cases have been reported, primarily concentrated in the regions of Casablanca-Settat and Souss-Massa. In light of this development, Washington is urging its citizens to verify their vaccination status.

This alert was officially released on October 15 by the U.S. diplomatic mission in Rabat. The embassy's official statement references several diphtheria clusters that have been reported by the Moroccan Ministry of Health since September 28. The embassy recommends that American citizens currently residing in Morocco, or those planning to visit, confirm their immunization against this disease.

Current Situation and Recommendations

According to data released by Moroccan health authorities on October 14, the confirmed cases of diphtheria are distributed across the country, with a significant concentration in the Casablanca-Settat and Souss-Massa regions. The initial family clusters were identified in Agadir Ida-Outanane and Chtouka Aït Baha, as also reported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

The U.S. Embassy assesses the risk level for its citizens in Morocco as low. However, it strongly advises individuals to review their vaccination records and those of their children. The embassy also highlights the American recommendation for adults to receive a diphtheria booster every ten years, utilizing either the Td or Tdap vaccines based on their vaccination history.

Diphtheria is a contagious bacterial infection that can spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, swollen neck, and the formation of a grayish membrane in the throat. Severe cases can lead to respiratory difficulties, necessitating urgent medical attention.

In response to this public health concern, Moroccan health authorities are conducting outreach operations to identify individuals who have come into contact with infected persons, along with implementing preventive treatments and targeted vaccinations. The embassy advises that anyone experiencing suspicious symptoms, particularly difficulty swallowing or breathing, should seek medical attention promptly.

The primary defense against this infection remains vaccination. The Moroccan Ministry of Health is urging families to ensure that they complete the required doses outlined in the national childhood vaccination schedule.
