Morocco's Airport Expansion Set to Create Nearly 49,000 Jobs

Massive Job Creation Through Moroccan Airport Developments

The expansion of airports in Morocco, specifically in major cities such as Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, is projected to generate an astonishing 48,722 jobs, according to estimates from the African Development Bank. This significant development is expected to provide thousands of direct employment opportunities, alongside a far-reaching indirect economic impact that will benefit various sectors of the Moroccan economy.

Of the total job creation forecasted, around 19,000 positions are anticipated to be directly linked to the airport projects, while an additional 29,722 jobs are expected to arise indirectly as the infrastructure develops. Furthermore, the African Development Bank highlights a commitment to gender equality in employment, aiming to allocate approximately 30% of the new jobs to women and 34% to youth, thus fostering an inclusive workforce in Morocco.

The majority of these employment opportunities will emerge during the construction phase and once the new facilities are operational. In the longer term, the airport expansions are also set to stimulate job growth in sectors such as tourism, commerce, transportation, and logistics, further enhancing Morocco's economic landscape.

Marrakech Airport to Handle 14 Million Passengers by 2030

The upgrades across the four airports will include larger terminals and upgraded facilities, alongside modern security systems, baggage handling, and aircraft infrastructure improvements. Marrakech, for instance, is expected to accommodate 14 million passengers annually by 2030, a significant increase from the 9.2 million passengers recorded in 2024. Agadir is projected to expand its capacity from 3.1 million to 5 million passengers, while Tangier and Fez anticipate growth from 2.4 million to 3.6 million and from 2 million to 3 million passengers, respectively.

These ambitious expansions are supported by a substantial loan of 270 million euros from the African Development Bank to the airport authority, ONDA. This investment is part of the broader infrastructure initiatives leading up to the FIFA World Cup in 2030, emphasizing Morocco's commitment to modernizing its transportation capabilities. It is important to note that while the forecast of 48,722 jobs is promising, it represents an economic projection and does not imply that all positions will be available immediately or on a permanent basis.
