Italian Nurses Heroically Save Baby's Life on Flight from Bergamo to Marrakech

Heroic Actions of Two Italian Nurses Aboard a Flight

In a remarkable turn of events on a recent flight from Bergamo, Italy, to Marrakech, Morocco, two Italian nurses found themselves in a life-or-death situation when a 13-month-old infant suddenly stopped breathing. The flight, which was initially filled with the excitement of vacation, quickly turned into a crisis, causing panic among passengers and crew members. Responding to the emergency, the cabin crew issued a call for any medical professionals on board to assist, and without hesitation, Ilaria Valentini and Riccardo Marchetto stepped forward to help save the child.

As they approached the scene, the situation was chaotic. The child's distraught mother and family struggled to communicate the severity of the crisis due to language barriers. They pointed toward the infant's throat, suggesting a potential airway obstruction. Understanding the urgency, the two nurses immediately began pediatric airway clearance techniques in collaboration with the flight crew and several passengers, including a Moroccan-Italian individual who acted as an interpreter. However, when they requested emergency medical equipment available on the flight, they discovered that it was inadequate; while there was a self-expanding bag, the necessary pediatric masks for ventilation were missing. This unfortunate oversight forced the nurses to resort to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, alternating their efforts with chest compressions.

After two full cycles of resuscitation, the infant miraculously began to breathe again, much to the relief of everyone on board. It was later determined that the child had likely experienced a febrile seizure followed by hypoventilation, causing the alarming situation. The actions taken by Ilaria and Riccardo not only demonstrated their profound medical knowledge but also their ability to remain calm under pressure, traits that are essential in emergency situations.

Recognition and Response Post-Incident

Upon landing, the aircraft's captain emerged visibly shaken from the cockpit, and the child, along with her family, was immediately handed over to paramedics for further medical evaluation. Following the incident, the two nurses took the initiative to contact the airline to address the deficiencies they observed in the emergency medical equipment, advocating for more stringent checks to ensure future safety. As of now, they have yet to receive a response from the airline.

The nursing community in Vicenza, Italy, has expressed admiration for the professionalism and quick thinking displayed by Ilaria and Riccardo. Giacomo Canova, the president of the local nursing board, praised their ability to manage an extremely serious emergency in a challenging environment far removed from their usual medical support systems. "We just did our duty; any healthcare professional would have done the same," the couple stated modestly, highlighting their commitment to their profession and the well-being of those in need.
