Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Moroccan Tomatoes Affects Over 200 Individuals Across Europe

Salmonella Outbreak Traced to Morocco’s Tomatoes

In a concerning public health incident, more than 200 individuals across three countries have fallen ill due to a Salmonella outbreak that has been linked to contaminated tomatoes originating from Morocco. The outbreak, which occurred between July and October 2024, has predominantly affected the United Kingdom, where the largest number of infections were reported. A total of 216 patients have been identified with genetically related Salmonella Blockley infections, with the majority of cases occurring in the UK, but also impacting France and Germany.

Specifically, the outbreak saw 129 individuals infected in the UK alone, which breaks down to 79 cases in England, 33 in Scotland, and 17 in Wales. France reported 56 cases, while Germany had 30 reported infections. Additionally, one individual in the United States also became ill, although they had traveled to the UK prior to showing any symptoms. This international health crisis highlights the serious risks associated with foodborne illnesses and the need for stringent food safety measures.

The implications of this outbreak are significant, particularly for Morocco’s agricultural exports, especially tomatoes, which are a staple in many international markets. As consumers become increasingly aware of food safety issues, the need for transparency and rigorous quality controls in food production is more critical than ever. The health authorities in the affected countries are currently investigating the source of the contamination and are urging anyone who may have purchased these tomatoes to dispose of them and seek medical attention if they exhibit any symptoms of Salmonella infection.
