Historic Milestone in Morocco-Israel Military Cooperation at Marrakech Airshow 2026

Historic Participation of Israel at Marrakech Airshow 2026

The Marrakech Airshow 2026, held from October 7 to 10, marks a significant turning point in military collaboration between Morocco and Israel, as it features Israel's first official participation with a national pavilion. This event underscores the evolving relationship between the two nations since the normalization of ties in December 2020, facilitated by the Abraham Accords. The Israeli Ministry of Defense, through its International Cooperation Directorate, SIBAT, led by Brigadier General (Res.) Yair Kulas, inaugurated an official stand, showcasing Israel's commitment to deepening military cooperation.

Prominent Israeli defense industries attended the event, including Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Elbit Systems, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. These companies presented cutting-edge technologies across various domains such as aerial, land, naval, and space defense, intelligence, cybersecurity, drones, AI-driven robotics, laser guidance, and satellite communications. High-ranking officials from Morocco's military, including Minister Delegate for National Defense Administration Abdellatif Loudiyi and General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), visited the pavilion, indicating the importance of this collaboration.

Strengthening Military and Diplomatic Ties

This development is part of a broader strategic rapprochement initiated in late 2020 and further solidified by defense agreements in 2021. Bilateral projects encompass technology transfers, co-productions—such as various drone projects—and enhanced intelligence cooperation. Despite the strengthening of governmental ties, including recent announcements about converting liaison offices into full-fledged embassies, the normalization of relations continues to evoke mixed reactions within Moroccan society, particularly among pro-Palestinian groups who express solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

A major milestone in diplomatic relations was reached when Morocco and Israel confirmed their agreement to elevate their diplomatic missions to fully-fledged embassies. This historic announcement occurred on September 16, following a meeting between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita at the United Nations headquarters in New York, under the auspices of the American representative to the UN.

Amir Peretz, former Minister of Defense and head of the Israeli Labor Party, has played a pivotal role in advancing commercial relations and strategic partnerships with Morocco during his tenure as chairman of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) from December 2021 to November 2024. His leadership is expected to foster mutual benefits in defense and technology sectors between the two nations.

The Morocco-Israel relationship, formalized by a tripartite agreement in December 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, involves a diverse array of political, military, economic, and cultural actors. Key figures include King Mohammed VI, who balances the strategic alliance with Israel while upholding Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara and traditionally supporting the Palestinian cause. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has prioritized strengthening ties with Morocco as part of his regional normalization strategy.

The U.S. administration has been an essential facilitator of this normalization process, with former President Donald Trump recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for its rapprochement with Tel Aviv. Military cooperation forms the bedrock of this partnership, structured by a joint Israeli-Moroccan military committee that outlines operational programs. Major Israeli defense companies provide critical technologies to Morocco, enhancing its military capabilities in response to regional challenges.

Furthermore, economic and commercial actors, including major Israeli tech firms and agricultural enterprises, have established a foothold in Morocco, facilitating trade and investment. Royal Air Maroc and other airlines now operate direct flights connecting Casablanca and Marrakech to Tel Aviv, promoting tourism and business exchanges.

The Moroccan Jewish diaspora, comprising approximately 800,000 individuals in Israel, serves as a historical and cultural bridge between the two nations, fostering human connections. Nonetheless, the Moroccan public and civil society remain critical voices in this narrative, with significant segments expressing opposition to normalization, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in the region.
